6 Questions to help you Connect with your Preschooler
Preschool is a magical time in a child’s life filled with new experiences, learning, and growth. As a parent, you may be eager to connect with your preschooler, but simply asking, ‘How was your day?’ may not always prompt their best response.
Knowing what to ask can be challenging, especially when you want insight into your child’s preschool experience. So we have prepared this guide to help you have meaningful conversations with your child.
Here are six questions that will open a window to your preschooler’s thoughts, feelings, and development.
What was your favourite part of preschool today?
Asking your child about their favourite part of their day at preschool invites them to share specific moments that were meaningful to them, making it easier for them to recall and articulate their experiences.
By actively listening to their response, you demonstrate interest and support and reinforce the importance of communication in your relationship.
Did anything make you feel happy today?
Encouraging your child to express their emotions fosters emotional intelligence and builds trust. By asking if anything made them happy, you create a space for your child to share positive experiences and celebrate achievements.
What made them happy could be as simple as receiving praise from a preschool teacher or accomplishing a task independently. Acknowledging and validating your child’s emotions helps them feel understood and supported, strengthening your connection.
What story did you enjoy during storytime?
Preschool often includes storytelling, introducing children to the magic of books and imagination. Asking your child about the story they enjoyed during storytime sparks conversation and promotes literacy and language development.
It allows your child to share their thoughts, preferences, and interpretations, fostering a love for reading and storytelling. Additionally, discussing stories opens the door to further exploration and creativity at home through reading together or engaging in imaginative play inspired by the narrative.
What did you have for a snack or lunch today? Did you like it?
Mealtime is an opportunity for children to socialise, practise manners, and explore different foods. You show interest in their daily routines and experiences beyond the classroom by asking about their snack or lunch.
This question encourages your child to share their food preferences, experiences with new foods, and interactions with peers during mealtime. Discussing food also fosters healthy eating habits and allows you to address any concerns or preferences your child may have regarding their meals at preschool.
Can you show me something you created or worked on in class?
Preschoolers are naturally curious and creative, constantly exploring and experimenting with various materials and activities. Asking your child to show you something they created or worked on in class provides insight into their interests, skills, and accomplishments.
Whether it’s a colourful artwork, a craft project, or a learning activity, your child will relish being able to showcase their efforts and achievements. Celebrating their creations fosters confidence and self-expression while reinforcing the value of their learning experiences at preschool.
Was there something a little challenging for you? How did you handle it?
Based on our internal survey conducted with parents of current students in 2023, 91% of parents say My First Skool helped their child to develop independence.
Learning and growth often involve challenges, and preschool is no exception. Asking your child about any challenges they encountered during the day can open the door for discussions about problem-solving and perseverance.
The question could be about mastering a new skill, navigating social interactions, or dealing with emotions. You may then offer support and encouragement to reinforce resilience and help them develop coping skills.
Give your child the best preschool experience
As a parent, involvement and engagement are crucial in shaping your child’s preschool experience. Thoughtful questions and active listening can create opportunities for connection, understanding, and support.
Building a foundation of communication and trust strengthens your relationship with your preschooler and enriches their learning journey. So, take the time to engage with your child, ask questions, and cherish the moments you share. After all, the preschool years are fleeting, but the memories you create will last forever.
The best preschool in Singapore focuses on education while encouraging children to explore their environment and express themselves. My First Skool always strives to achieve this.
