With Singapore back to a heightened alert phase and precautionary measures stepped up once again, parents and children across Singapore will be staying home a lot more. You can use this “stay home time” as an opportunity to enjoy bonding time with your child – and what better way to do so, than by creating precious moments through play!
These are 5 of our favourite “Stay Home, Stay Safe” activities that your child will have lots of fun doing.
#1 - Cooking with Mummy and Daddy
Children love hands-on activities, which makes cooking a great activity for the family. Need some ideas of what to whip up? Watch this playlist of cooking tutorials and recipes (thoughtfully filmed by cooks from NTUC First Campus’ My First Skool) with your child, then decide on what you’d like to make for tomorrow’s dinner.
While you’ll handle the knives and fire, your child can help with other aspects of food preparations. As a bonus, while your child has fun assisting you, they will also learn the value of helping others. You can also use this activity to teach your child about the health benefits of common categories of ingredients – for example, how fruits provide our bodies with vitamins that build our immune system, while meat gives us protein for muscle growth, milk has calcium for strong bones, etc.
#2 - Blended learning can be fun!
Need some quiet time for work or relaxation? One great way to keep your child entertained is by tuning into My First Skool’s collection of learning resources. Our engaging selection of videos contain hours of fun and enriching content that will have your child learning new skills as they dance, sing and play along!
#3 - Fun with science
In our learning environments, science experiments are always a hit with children. Their naturally inquisitive minds are constantly observing the world around them and making discoveries, which expands their knowledge.
Now, you can bring some aspects of our hands-on curriculum into your home with these simple-to-do experiments that will teach your child interesting scientific facts – like the freezing point of water, flash freezing, and other fascinating concepts!

#4 - Let’s grow a home garden!
Missing the beauty of nature? Then, why not bring nature into your home? Gardening is a fun hobby that can be enjoyed by children and parents alike, and can develop a sense of responsibility in your child – especially as they water the plants every day and see the garden flourish.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a huge backyard, your garden can be grown in an apartment too. Just choose an area with lots of sunlight and your plants will have all the nourishing sun they need. An easy-to-grow plant that’s ideal for the home is the onion plant. Watch the video below with your child, and learn how to successfully care for your onion plant at home.
As your plants flourish, you can teach your child about how plants grow, how flowers bloom during certain seasons, how photosynthesis works, and more. This hands-on approach is how we teach these concepts to our children at My First Skool.
Children at NTUC First Campus’ My First Skool will have more opportunities to interact with and appreciate nature. Currently, 97% of our preschool centres have developed Community in Bloom (CIB) programmes with input from the National Parks Board (NParks). And we intend to go even further, with plans to set up a CIB garden at all of our preschool centres!
#5 - Transform your home into a carnival!
Missing the “good old days” where you could take your child to a carnival and see their eyes light up with delight as they played all the fun-filled games? Why not bring the carnival into your home?
Recreating iconic carnival games at home is a lot simpler than you may imagine. Need a helping hand? In this article, we show you (with videos) how to create your own versions of “Whack-a-Mole”, miniature bowling, an obstacle course race, and the train-teasing “Tilt & Roll Maze”.
By making these games with your child, you’ll also allow them to expand their creativity and solve problems – while having lots of fun!
